Wimmin in Wax – A New Ball of
Wax – Group Exhibition
Hinton Public Library, Switzer Drive
Opening reception from 2 to 4 pm
Refreshments, Artists in attendance!
There are eight Wimmin in Wax encaustic artists in exhibiting in this event: Lorna Kemp, Catherine Boggs, Aurelia
Saunders, Izabella Orzelski-Konikowski, Sirkka Kadatz, Jane Montgomery, Diane Plasse and Monika Dery.
The 30 paintings are a large variety of wax-based pieces with many different techniques as we are a very loosely
based group with different painting backgrounds. Four of us have just returned from the International Encaustics
Association conference in Portland, Oregon, and IEA is always looking for new encaustic artist members if you happen
to love wax. Lorna and Monika had paintings juried into the prestigious Columbia River Gallery for an exhibition
this coming month. Contact Monika for more information.

Wimmin in Wax – A New Ball of
Wax – Group Exhibition and Sale
University of Alberta –
Enterprise Square (formerly the downtown Bay store)
Open 7 am to 11 pm, 10230 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, AB
Opening Reception August 26 from 6-8 pm. Refreshments, Artists
in attendance.
"Wimmin in Wax," a loosely knit group of Alberta visual
artists, hosts this fantastic encaustic art exhibition reception with most artists in attendance.
These 10 wax-based artists will wow guests with their innovative use of wax in creating a new/old form of art.
Encaustic art has been around for thousands of years and many of the Fayum paintings in the tombs of the Pharaohs
are still as beautiful as the day they were painted.
June 2011
HAC just finished a printmaking
workshop with Ron Wigglesworth from the U of A in Edmonton. We learned (or refreshed) woodblock, copper, polymer
photo transfer, plexi and glass printmaking during the 3 days. It was great fun and very informative as Ron is
an accomplished international printmaker, recently returned from several years in Europe.

May 2011
Monika received the Juror's Choice Award at the ACACA competition
in HInton in May as well as the Master's Award for the Northern Zone. The painting, in Red Deer for the Provincial
Exhibition and Competition, will go on to a dedicated exhibition at the VAAA Gallery in Edmonton at the end of
that show the middle of August for another month's exhibition.

"CKUA's First Friday in Hinton
What a blast! On June 5th, CKUA and the Hinton Art Club joined forces for a First Friday evening to remember.
Andy Donnelly began the evening in the ballroom at the Howard Johnson’s Hotel in Hinton with the Celtic Show, playing
great music and learning all about Hinton’s vibrant arts community.
CKUA’s morning man Tony King then hosted a live hour-long concert by the Polyjesters. The four-piece band from
Carstairs brought tons of energy to the room, playing their own genre of music, a combination of bluegrass and
jazz they have dubbed "blazz". No matter what you call it, these guys certainly know how to get the crowd
on their feet!
Throughout the evening, the Hinton Art Club revealed their mural mosaic; a community art project that included
240 panels painted by Hintonites from all walks of life.
Art, music, dancing and good times – CKUA’s First Fridays in Hinton was definitely a success!"

"New York was fantastic, and this time
I ended up going to three Broadway plays: We saw "A Chorus Line," Translations (a dark Irish Epic about
the potato famine and war) and "The Drowsy Chaperone" which came from Canada and earned five Tonys last
year. It was great fun, as was Chorus Line.
Went to the Pierre again and also dined our way around the city, having the second best meal at the Red Cat in
Chelsea, an Italian restaurant which was almost full when we got there for our reservation.
The
ArtExpo was well-received and I came back with only one of the six small paintings I brought with me. I met some
really interesting artists there (one wax-based artist/sculptor was from Toronto, a friend of a friend from Quebec
who does fabulous big city streetscapes and an abstract artist from the French Riviera) but it was truly mind-boggling.
Over 1,000 booths with an approximate total of artists around 3000 artists. They were there from all over the world
including Asia, China, Europe, North and South America and everywhere in between.
Visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim (which was showing Picasso, Miro, El Greco and several
other artists) were wonderful. Harlem was fun and not scary at all...we stopped in at the Paris Blues club and
did a few numbers. Juliet and I have been invited back next year to do an engagement." See the Photographs page for more pictures from New York. |
