HINTON ART CLUB 2011
Printmaking workshop with Rongglesworth
HAC just finished a printmaking workshop with Ron Wigglesworth from the U of A in Edmonton. We learned (or refreshed) woodblock, copper, polymer photo transfer, plexi and glass printmaking during the 3 days. It was great fun and very informative as Ron is an accomplished international printmaker, recently returned from several years in Europe.

Printmaker brings know-how to Hinton Art Club

Some local artists had a chance to try something new when a well-renowned printmaker stopped in Hinton to host a workshop June 10-12.

Ron Wigglesworth, an instructor at the University of Alberta, gave the workshop at The Guild over the weekend, introducing aspiring printmakers to the medium.

Each participant was encouraged to send Wigglesworth a photo they had taken in their travels before the workshop. He then had the photo printed and carved into different printmaking materials including wood blocks, linoleum and plexiglass.

The essence of a print is that an image is carved into the material in mirror-vision and is then used as a large stamp, making a picture with different types of inks. In order to make a proper image, a press is needed to put the proper pressure on the materials.

"We really had a good workshop," said Monika Dery, Hinton Art Club member and participant in the printmaking event. "We had a good bulk of knowledge of the assets of printmaking by the end of the weekend."
Eight people participated in the event, including two from Edmonton who traveled into town with Wigglesworth to take the course.

The mother-daughter duo from the city are planning on returning to Hinton in the future to use the Hinton Art Club's printing press now that they are members of the local club.

"Very few art organizations actually have their own printing press," said Dery.
Dery said she herself got a lot out of the course. "I found a new creativity and I learned most of these things years ago," she said, recalling her art instruction in university. "I got to create more and had the desire to do more artwork as opposed to gardening, mowing the lawn or doing other mundane activities."

While the Hinton Art Club is finished meeting for the summer, the facilities in the art room at The Guild are open to members year-round. "It's there to be used and we'd like to have more people enjoying our open studios," said Dery. "Every type of equipment an artist might need is there."

Hinton Art Club Kicks Off Winter Season

The Hinton Art Club kicked off a busy winter of creativity at Art Days on Sept. 18, where course sign-ups were held and information was given out to potential new members.

Secretary of the club and accomplished artist, Monika Dery, said the summer is actually a slower time for art in the community. The club holds its first meeting of the year in August and finishes up in the spring.
“The summer is not really the art time here,” Dery said.

This year, the Hinton Art Club is launching a number of new and exciting courses for all types of artists. The club recently purchased a series of DVD lectures that feature famous impressionists. They feature a biography and sample of the artist’s work, followed by lessons in each artist’s technique. The classes will be facilitated by a local artist and last for 24 sessions with discussions after the film. Classes will be drop-in and can all be attended between Oct. 4 to Dec. 15. Featured artists will be Van Gogh, Pissarro, Monet, Manet, Renoir, Cézanne and Degas.
